News Coverage of National Governor’s Conference Tea Party Rally

Governors Conference in Biloxi - July 19th, 2009

Governor's Conference in Biloxi - July 19th, 2009

The Mississippi Press reports that about 1,500 people showed up to march and demonstrate. Read the  full story.

The SunHerald.com covered the Tea Party as part of a “style” story describing the luau attended by the spouses of the Governors. The story’s author, Mary Perez, only counted 400 people in attendance and said that the heat kept attendance low. Perez then quoted a Louisiana resident as saying, “We’re not happy with the way things are going.” Is it possible that the comment referenced Obama’s Health Care or the protest itself? Perez doesn’t make it clear. Perhaps you can ask her: meperez@sunherald.com

The Clarion Ledger covered the Conference, but didn’t include any reference to the demonstration. Surprise, Surprise!

While Dan Baiz of The Washington Post was in Biloxi to cover the Conference, he some how “missed” the fact that there were protests taking place at the same time. No where in the two-page story was any mention of the Rally.

WLOX ABC-13 had a pretty good story posted on their website, but there was no mention of  any estimate of attendance and the photo they put on the story implied that only about 10 people were actually there.

The best coverage I could find was on GulfCoastNews.com which had a lot of photos and estimates of the crowd and a good overview of the goals of the organizations involved.

Please add comments and include links to any other stories or pictures you find. We need to make sure we recognize all of those that covered the story accurately and point out those that missed the point.
