March Madness: U.S. Gov’t Spent More Than Eight Times Its Monthly Revenue

Terence P. Jeffrey posted a story at CNSNews.com that just made my jaw drop.

(CNSNews.com) – The U.S. Treasury has released a final statement for the month of March that demonstrates that financial madness has gripped the federal government.

During the month, according to the Treasury, the federal government grossed $194 billion in tax revenue and paid out $65.898 billion in tax refunds (including $62.011 to individuals and $3.887 to businesses) thus netting $128.179 billion in tax revenue for March.

At the same time, the Treasury paid out a total of $1.1187 trillion. When the $65.898 billion in tax refunds is deducted from that, the Treasury paid a net of $1.0528 trillion in federal expenses for March. That $1.0528 trillion in spending for March equaled 8.2 times the $128.179 [billion] in net federal tax revenue for the month.

Harry Reid can try to point his crooked little finger at Tea Party people all he wants, but the facts are that the United States should not and cannot sustain this level of irresponsibility on the part of its leaders, Democrat OR Republican.

A business spending 8 times its revenue in single month might raise some eyebrows especially if the expenditures aren’t for capital improvements. But the problem is that this isn’t a one-time overspending with extraordinary circumstances. This is the norm for our Federal Government. This spending spree has been going on a long time, but it accelerated once Pelosi took over the House Leadership more than four years ago.

Our Country is bleeding red ink. Tea Party members have been screaming that we cannot sustain this lifestyle. As individuals we know that if we spend more than we make for an extended period of time, the debt crushes our households, devastates our families and endangers our children. Financial woes are the biggest cause of divorces in our Country. The children of such divorces are the ultimate losers since strained financial resources are split even further. The same is true at the Federal Level. Our children and their children’s children will be the ultimate losers if we don’t stand up, take responsibility and pay our debts.

In all my years of watching politics, I’ve never seen the arguing and verbal abuse that is taking place between supposedly good people. Why are Harry Reid and Charles Schumer so hell-bent on making our financial situation about the Tea Party? Are they falling into the same old cliche of killing the messenger? Or, are they looking to divert attention from their mis-management? Is it time to start some long deserved investigations into these and other Congressmen and Senators? This situation is reaching a point where in business someone would go to jail for this kind of abuse of power. Bernie Madoff is starting to look like a piker at this point.

From the beginning a cornerstone of the Tea Party Movement has been a focus on the lack of Fiscal Responsibility on the part of our elected officials.

Ronald Reagan once said:

“We could say [Democrats] spend money like drunken sailors, but that would be unfair to drunken sailors. It would be unfair, because the sailors are spending their own money.”

However, there’s another difference between sailors and Democrats/Liberals: When sailors run out of their own money they quit drinking, head back to the ship, sober up and go back to work. But Democrats aren’t spending their own money, we’ve basically given them an open bar with no tab and they have no intention of stopping until the party is shut down by the police.

The message the Tea Party has been promoting from the very beginning has been that we cannot continue to spend our resources without regard to the future. For over two years, we have argued against unreasonable and unjustifiable expenditures. We worked hard in the last election to make our voices heard and now our elected officials wonder in fake surprise and dismay as to how we could possibly be upset over these little, old Continuing Resolutions or how we could ever be upset over raising the debt ceiling just a little bit.

Do They Not Get It?

Can elected officials really be that stupid?

I suggest that the Tea Party Movement consider adopting a new message:

Shut it down. Shut It Down NOW!
